What is Cover-More and who's behind it?
Cover-More is a specialist travel insurance brand that started in Sydney in 1986. It set up in New Zealand in 2007 under the Travelsure name, later rebranded to Cover-More, and says it has looked after more than 15 million travellers globally. Zurich Insurance Group acquired Cover-More in 2017.
In New Zealand the policies are arranged and administered by Cover-More (NZ) Limited (FSP26184) and underwritten and issued by Zurich Australian Insurance Limited, trading as Zurich New Zealand. The current policy wording (effective 14 January 2026) states that Zurich's insurer financial strength rating is AA- from Standard & Poor's, and that Zurich New Zealand is a signatory to the Fair Insurance Code.
Cover-More also sits behind some other NZ travel products. For example, AA Travel Insurance policies issued from 1 December 2025 are underwritten by Zurich New Zealand and distributed, arranged and administered by Cover-More (NZ) Limited. The direct Cover-More range includes:
Policies are bought online at covermore.co.nz or by phone on 0800 500 225. The 24-hour emergency assistance team handled around 300,000 calls and 1,400 medical evacuations globally in 2024, according to the brand's own figures. Complaints that cannot be resolved internally can go to the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman (IFSO).
How customers rate Cover-More across review platforms
Note on rating differences: Cover-More's ratings point in different directions. Cover-More NZ reports a 4.8 Google rating on its own site but does not publish the review count, so we could not verify the sample. There is no NZ-specific Trustpilot profile. The covermore.com.au Trustpilot profile scores 3.2 from 263 reviews and is sharply split (46% five-star, 45% one-star), and most of its reviewers are Australian policyholders on different policy terms. The NZ Feefo profile holds 157 older reviews but is no longer active. Because none of these is a verifiable, current NZ customer rating (the Google figure is brand-reported, the Trustpilot profile is Australian and the NZ Feefo profile is inactive), we do not show an overall customer score for Cover-More NZ. The Australian Trustpilot figures are shown for context only. We do our best to keep all data up to date and accurate. If you've noticed something incorrect, please let us know.
Common themes from 263 Trustpilot reviews, including recent reviews from New Zealand
Trip cancellation claim was handled smoothly, with clear communication and professional support the whole way through.
The claim for my husband's hospital stay in Spain was approved, but the hospital still had not been paid months later. Promises kept being made and broken.
A health problem forced us to cancel a Spain and Portugal trip. The full airfare cost was reimbursed within about five weeks.
My wife developed shingles mid-trip. We lodged the claim and then got the run-around, with promised callbacks from the claims team never arriving.
Lost prescription sunglasses were approved and paid promptly, minus the excess. No complaints at all.
Passports were stolen in January and the claim is still dragging on because the same documents keep being requested.
Reviews are paraphrased summaries of real customer reviews, not direct quotes. Theme percentages are the star distribution shown on the covermore.com.au Trustpilot profile (263 reviews) as viewed in September 2026. Most of those reviewers are Australian, so their experience may not match NZ policies. Reviews marked NZ reviewer were posted by reviewers located in New Zealand.
Cover-More focuses on travel insurance only, with international, domestic, cruise and inbound options
Three single-trip plans. Basic, Comprehensive and Comprehensive+ all include unlimited overseas medical expenses (for up to 12 months from onset). Cancellation cover is chosen by you, and luggage limits run from $5,000 to $30,000 per adult. See the policy wording.
Comprehensive or Comprehensive+ cover for an unlimited number of trips in a year, up to the maximum journey length you choose. Trips within NZ are included if they are more than 100 km from home or include a paid night's accommodation.
Required for multi-night ocean cruises outside NZ's territorial sea. Adds unlimited on-board medical and ship-to-shore medical cover, cabin confinement ($100 a day) and missed port or shore excursion benefits ($1,000 each).
Domestic Basic, Comprehensive and Comprehensive+ plans for trips within New Zealand. All include $10,000 cancellation cover. Luggage and rental vehicle excess cover apply on the Comprehensive and Comprehensive+ plans only.
Cover-More does not sell car, house, contents, pet, health or life insurance. For home and car cover, compare options such as AA Insurance or the insurance brand Cove.

How much does Cover-More cost? Indicative ranges based on our travel insurance cost guide
Cover-More does not publish sample premiums, so the figures below are the market ranges from our travel insurance cost guide for the relevant type of cover, not Cover-More quotes. Cover-More sits in the comprehensive part of the market, so expect prices toward the middle or upper end of each range for Comprehensive+.
Disclaimer: These are indicative market ranges from our travel insurance cost guide, not Cover-More quotes. Your premium depends on destination, age, trip length, excess, cancellation amount, existing medical conditions and add-ons such as Cruise Cover. Get an accurate quote at covermore.co.nz. We do our best to keep all data up to date and accurate. If you've noticed something incorrect, please let us know.
Where you travel influences the premium. If 20% or more of a trip is in the Americas or Antarctica, that area must be nominated as the main destination.
Basic, Comprehensive and Comprehensive+ share unlimited overseas medical but differ sharply on luggage, rental vehicle excess, travel delay and insolvency cover.
You pick the cancellation cover amount, and it applies per policy rather than per adult. A higher amount costs more.
Some listed conditions are covered automatically if criteria are met. Others need assessment and may add premium or be declined.
Older travellers generally pay more. Our cost guide puts over-65 single-trip cover at around $120-$300 or more.
Cruise Cover, higher item limits and a lower chosen excess all increase the premium. A higher excess lowers it.

Other travel insurance options worth considering, depending on your priorities
One of NZ's most recognised travel insurance brands, with tiered international, domestic and annual multi-trip plans. A commonly chosen alternative for travellers wanting a large NZ-based provider.
Allianz Travel Insurance (formerly Worldcare) offers Comprehensive, Basic, Multi-Trip and Domestic plans for all ages, underwritten by Mitsui Sumitomo, with $20 million overseas medical.
Adventure-focused cover for NZ residents aged 69 or younger. It can be bought or extended while you are already overseas, subject to a 72-hour waiting period.
AA Travel Insurance is also underwritten by Zurich New Zealand and administered by Cover-More, so it may suit AA members who want similar underwriting under a familiar brand.
Cover-More may suit some travellers more than others
Travellers who want unlimited overseas medical expenses even on the entry-level Basic plan, especially for destinations with high hospital costs such as the USA.
People booking multi-night ocean cruises who want a dedicated Cruise Cover add-on with unlimited on-board medical and missed port benefits.
Travellers hiring cars abroad, where Comprehensive+ offers up to $10,000 of rental vehicle insurance excess cover.
Travellers who have already left NZ without cover should check eligibility first (World Nomads allows purchase mid-trip). It may also not suit anyone who puts heavy weight on consistently strong public review scores.
Compare.org.nz's editorial assessment of Cover-More
On paper Cover-More is hard to fault. Every international plan carries unlimited overseas medical expenses, Comprehensive+ offers some of the highest luggage and rental vehicle excess limits we have seen, and the underwriter, Zurich New Zealand, holds an AA- financial strength rating. The 21-day cooling-off period and optional Cruise Cover add to its appeal for longer or more complex trips.
The customer picture is less clear. Cover-More NZ reports a 4.8 Google rating, but without a review count we cannot judge the sample. The Trustpilot profile we could inspect is split almost evenly between five-star and one-star reviews, with the negative ones concentrating on slow claims and repeated document requests. Most of those reviewers are Australian, and the two recent NZ reviews we found were one strongly positive and one strongly negative.
Cover-More may suit travellers who value high benefit limits and unlimited medical cover, and who are prepared to keep good records in case of a claim. It is worth comparing against Southern Cross and Allianz Partners on price for your specific trip.
