Zoom is an online travel insurance brand run by Auckland-registered The Insurance Geeks Limited and underwritten by HDI Global Specialty SE. It won three Canstar Outstanding Value awards for 2025, but its Trustpilot reviews are split between happy buyers and unhappy claimants. Here is what the ratings, the policy wording and the reviews show.

What is Zoom Travel Insurance and who is behind it?
Zoom Travel Insurance is a registered business name of The Insurance Geeks Limited (NZ company number 5904999, FSP505566), a company registered in April 2016 with an Auckland address. Zoom sells travel insurance online only. It says its founders have been selling travel insurance online for around eighteen years.
Zoom does not carry the risk itself. The insurer is HDI Global Specialty SE - New Zealand (FSP 774050), the New Zealand branch of a German insurer that belongs to the Talanx Group. Coffre-Fort Pty Ltd acts as the underwriting agent, which means it issues policies and handles and settles claims on the insurer's behalf, according to Zoom's policy wording dated 4 March 2026.
The Insurance Geeks Limited also trades as TINZ (Travel Insurance NZ), so Zoom and TINZ are two brands from the same company. 1Cover is a separate company but shares the same insurer and underwriting agent, and 1Cover's chief operating officer is also a director of The Insurance Geeks Limited.
In its first year of assessment, Zoom won three Canstar Outstanding Value awards for 2025: International, Cruise and Seniors travel insurance. Zoom offers:
Policies can be cancelled for a full refund within 14 days of purchase if you have not started your trip or made a claim. Pre-existing medical conditions are not covered automatically. You declare them and complete an online medical assessment, and cover only applies once Zoom confirms it in writing.
How customers rate Zoom across review platforms
Note on rating differences: Zoom's Trustpilot profile is small (43 reviews) and polarised, with 58% five-star and 28% one-star reviews. Buyers praise price and ease of purchase, while most one-star reviews describe declined or reduced claims. Compare Travel Insurance shows a higher 4.3/5 overall, but its claims experience sub-score is only 2.8/5. Canstar awards measure price and features, not claims service. We weight ratings by review volume and consider all available data sources. We do our best to keep all data up to date and accurate. If you've noticed something incorrect, please let us know.
Common themes from 104+ reviews on Trustpilot and Compare Travel Insurance
Compared five travel insurers and Zoom was the cheapest. The application was simple and adding rental car excess cover took seconds.
My laptop was damaged on the trip. The claim went smoothly and the staff member handling it was supportive throughout.
When my daughter needed medical help overseas, the assistance team helped and even followed up afterwards to check on her.
The policy is hard to follow and the claim needed a lot of documents. It feels restrictive once something goes wrong.
A claim of about $3,700 was cut to around $900 after depreciation on fairly new items, and the excess came off what was left.
The quote went from about $640 to more than $3,000 after I disclosed well-managed medical conditions.
Reviews are paraphrased summaries of real customer feedback, not direct quotes. Percentages are taken from Zoom's Trustpilot star distribution (43 reviews) and category scores from Compare Travel Insurance (61 reviews), both as viewed in September 2026.
Zoom sells travel insurance only, with five plans and optional add-ons
Zoom's top single-trip plan and the one Canstar rated Outstanding Value for 2025. Available up to age 85 (trips of up to 90 days for ages 80 to 85). Limits below are from the 4 March 2026 policy wording.
Two cheaper overseas plans for travellers aged 69 or under. Standard keeps cancellation and luggage cover at lower limits, while Medical Only covers emergency medical costs without cancellation or luggage cover.
Annual multi-trip cover for people who travel several times a year. Available to travellers aged 69 or under.
Cover for trips within New Zealand, available up to age 85, with rental vehicle insurance excess included.
Zoom sells travel insurance only. For private health cover, compare providers such as Southern Cross and nib.
Zoom does not sell car, house or contents insurance. For those, consider AA Insurance, Tower, or the insurance brand Cove for car cover.
The good and the not-so-good based on customer reviews and our analysis
How much does Zoom Travel Insurance cost? Indicative market ranges
Zoom does not publish example premiums, so the figures below are the indicative market ranges from our travel insurance cost guide, not Zoom quotes. Canstar's 2025 Outstanding Value awards suggest Zoom's price for the features on offer sat at the sharper end of the market, but your premium depends on destination, age, trip length, excess and any declared conditions.
Disclaimer: These are indicative market ranges from our cost guide, not official Zoom quotes. Your actual premium will vary with destination, age, trip length, excess and medical conditions. You must tell Zoom every country you will visit, and the premium depends on where you are going. Cover for the USA typically costs more because medical bills there are higher.
Comprehensive is available up to age 85, with trips capped at 90 days for ages 80 to 85. Medical Only, Standard and Frequent Traveller stop at 69.
Nothing is covered automatically. Declared conditions are assessed online and can add a significant extra premium, which several Trustpilot reviewers comment on.
Medical Only is the cheapest overseas plan, Standard adds cancellation and $5,000 of luggage cover, and Comprehensive raises luggage to $10,000 and liability to $5M.
On plans with cancellation cover you choose the limit, so a higher limit for an expensive trip means a higher premium.
Rental vehicle excess, winter sports, cruise and bicycle cover all add to the price. Buy what you need before you travel.

Other NZ travel insurance options worth considering, depending on your priorities
Travel Insurance NZ, a business name of The Insurance Geeks Limited and underwritten by HDI Global Specialty SE. Its policy wording lists pre-existing conditions that are covered automatically, and overseas trips can run up to 18 months.
Travel-only brand founded in 2003, issued in NZ by 1Cover NZ Limited and underwritten by HDI Global Specialty SE. Won Canstar Outstanding Value for International and Seniors travel insurance in 2025.
Southern Cross Travel Insurance is issued by Southern Cross Benefits Limited, part of the not-for-profit Southern Cross group. It won all four Canstar Outstanding Value travel categories for 2025 and may suit travellers who want a large NZ-based insurer.
AA sells travel insurance in three levels (Essential, Comprehensive and Frequent Traveller) alongside car and home cover, so it may suit people who want several policies with one familiar NZ brand.
Zoom may suit some travellers more than others
People comparing prices online who want unlimited overseas medical cover from a brand that won three Canstar Outstanding Value awards for 2025.
Travellers up to 85 on the Comprehensive plan, especially those with no medical conditions to declare. Canstar rated Zoom Outstanding Value for seniors in 2025.
Cruise travellers comparing options, since Zoom won Canstar's 2025 Outstanding Value award for cruise travel insurance.
Travellers who put claims service first, or those with several pre-existing conditions. Zoom's claims scores are weak and no conditions are covered automatically, so compare TINZ and Southern Cross as well.
Compare.org.nz's editorial assessment of Zoom Travel Insurance
On paper Zoom is a strong product. Every overseas plan includes unlimited overseas medical cover, Comprehensive runs up to age 85, and it won three Canstar Outstanding Value awards for 2025 in its first year of assessment. The insurer behind it, HDI Global Specialty SE, is part of the Talanx Group and rated A+ by S&P.
The customer picture is more mixed. Zoom's Trustpilot rating of 3.9/5 comes from just 43 reviews, and 28% of them are one-star. Most of those describe declined claims, heavy depreciation on belongings or long document requests. The Compare Travel Insurance claims experience score of 2.8/5 points the same way, even though buyers rate value and service well.
Zoom may suit healthy travellers looking for a sharp price on solid cover. If you have medical conditions to declare, or you care most about a smooth claim, it is worth comparing its sister brand TINZ, which covers a list of conditions automatically, and Southern Cross.
