What is World Nomads and who's behind it?
World Nomads launched in Sydney in 2002 as an online travel insurance service for backpackers and adventurous travellers, and was bought by the nib Group in 2015 for about A$95 million. It sells direct online in many countries, with separate policies for each country of residence.
The NZ policy is underwritten by Pacific International Insurance Pty Ltd (NZBN 9429041356500, FSP 394846), which holds a B++ (Good) financial strength rating from A.M. Best. nib Travel Services (Australia) Pty Limited acts as the underwriting agent and handles claims, and WorldNomads.com Pty Limited markets and administers the policy. All of this is set out in the NZ Policy Document.
To buy the NZ policy you must be a New Zealand citizen or resident, be 69 or younger when you buy or extend it, and agree to be repatriated to New Zealand in a medical emergency. There are two plans:
A $100 excess applies per event on most benefits. The policy includes automatic cover for over 40 listed existing medical conditions if their criteria are met, and a 21-day cooling-off period. World Nomads is a member of the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman (IFSO) scheme for NZ complaints.
How customers rate World Nomads on review platforms
Note on rating differences: World Nomads does not have a separate NZ Trustpilot profile, so the 4.2/5 score from 6,586 reviews covers customers in every country it sells to. Many reviewers are in the USA, Canada and Australia, where policies, limits and claims teams differ from the NZ policy. Most five-star reviews describe buying a policy rather than claiming, while most one-star reviews describe claims. The underwriter's B++ (Good) rating from A.M. Best is lower than the ratings held by the underwriters behind Cover-More (AA-) and Allianz Partners (A+). We do our best to keep all data up to date and accurate. If you've noticed something incorrect, please let us know.
Common themes from 6,586 Trustpilot reviews, including New Zealand reviewers
Found the insurance really easy to set up. Simple and straightforward from start to finish.
Pricing was competitive against other providers and the quote process was quick and uncomplicated.
A claim for an event listed in the policy, a travel agency going bankrupt, was denied twice.
Easy to buy for a Thailand trip. The purchase process was straightforward.
The claim was denied even though the policy document clearly covered it, and the explanation given was inadequate.
Three simple plan options made choosing cover straightforward.
Reviews are paraphrased summaries of real customer reviews, not direct quotes. Theme percentages are the star distribution on the worldnomads.com Trustpilot profile (6,586 reviews) as viewed in September 2026. The profile covers all countries, so reviewers outside New Zealand may hold policies with different terms. Reviews marked NZ reviewer were posted by reviewers located in New Zealand.
World Nomads sells single-trip travel insurance for NZ residents, with two plan levels
The lower-cost option. Overseas medical is capped at $5 million for a single traveller ($10 million couple or family) and emergency medical transport at $500,000. There is no rental vehicle excess cover. See the Policy Document.
The higher plan. Overseas medical, medical transport and cancellation are unlimited, baggage rises to $10,000, and it adds rental vehicle excess, alternative therapies and a hospital cash benefit.
The NZ site lists 220+ adventure activities across snow, water, air and land. Level 1 activities are covered automatically. Higher-risk activities need a Level 2 or Level 3 upgrade, priced as a percentage of your premium, and must be selected when you buy.
World Nomads NZ sells single-trip policies only. For annual multi-trip cover, compare Cover-More, Allianz Partners or Southern Cross.
World Nomads does not sell car, house, contents, health or life insurance in NZ. For home and car cover, compare options such as AA Insurance or the insurance brand Cove.

How much does World Nomads cost? Indicative ranges based on our travel insurance cost guide

Where you travel changes the premium, with higher-cost medical destinations such as the USA generally costing more.
Explorer costs more than Standard but lifts medical, transport and cancellation limits to unlimited and adds rental vehicle excess cover.
Policies are priced on the length of your trip. Extending while overseas means buying more cover, with a waiting period applying to the new cover.
The activities you plan to do determine which level of adventure cover you need under the policy.
Cover is only available if you are 69 or younger when you buy or extend the policy.
Couple and family policies have higher combined limits, such as $10 million Standard plan medical cover instead of $5 million.

Other travel insurance options worth considering, depending on your priorities
Zurich-underwritten travel insurance with unlimited overseas medical on every international plan, high Comprehensive+ limits, annual multi-trip and a Cruise Cover add-on.
Allianz Travel Insurance (formerly Worldcare) is available to travellers of all ages, which may suit those over 69 who cannot buy World Nomads. Underwritten by Mitsui Sumitomo.
One of NZ's most recognised travel insurance brands, 100% New Zealand owned, with international, domestic and annual multi-trip plans.
AA Travel Insurance offers Essential, Comprehensive and Frequent Traveller plans, underwritten by Zurich New Zealand. It may suit travellers wanting a familiar NZ brand with annual multi-trip cover.
World Nomads may suit some travellers more than others
Travellers planning activities such as skiing, diving or trekking, who want to check their activity against a list of 220+ adventure activities.
Backpackers and gap-year travellers who may need to buy or extend cover while already overseas, accepting the 72-hour waiting period.
People combining travel with work, study or volunteering, which the policy addresses in its adventure, work, study and volunteer section.
Travellers aged 70 or over, frequent travellers wanting annual multi-trip cover, domestic-only trips, or anyone who prefers a highly rated underwriter.
Compare.org.nz's editorial assessment of World Nomads
For backpackers and long-term travellers World Nomads offers something most NZ providers do not. You can buy or extend cover once you are already overseas, and the NZ site lists more than 220 adventure activities. The Explorer plan's unlimited medical, transport and cancellation limits compare well with the best policies available to Kiwis, and the flat $100 excess is simple to understand.
Customer sentiment is broadly positive, with a 4.2/5 Trustpilot score from 6,586 reviews. That score reflects all markets, though, and the five-star reviews mostly describe the buying experience. The 18% of one-star reviews focus on slow or declined claims, which is the part of the experience that matters most when something goes wrong.
The limits of the product are clear. There is no annual multi-trip or domestic policy, cover stops at age 69, the Standard plan's $5 million medical cap is lower than several competitors, and the underwriter's B++ rating is below that of the underwriters behind Cover-More and Allianz Partners. World Nomads may suit younger, active travellers who value flexibility, particularly on the Explorer plan.
