What is Provident Insurance and who is behind it?
Provident Insurance Corporation Limited was incorporated on 23 May 2012 and launched in August 2013, founded by motor industry finance and insurance specialists Steve Owens, who is still chief executive, and John Copson. It is 100% New Zealand owned, with its head office at Level 1, 61 Hurstmere Road, Takapuna, and says it has helped more than 100,000 Kiwi drivers.
Unlike brands that sell another company's cover, Provident is the insurer. It is licensed by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, registered as a financial service provider (FSP270065), a member of the Insurance Council of New Zealand and bound by the Fair Insurance Code. AM Best upgraded its financial strength rating from B (Fair) to B+ (Good) in December 2024 and affirmed it with a stable outlook in December 2025. AM Best describes Provident as a niche mechanical breakdown and private motor insurer distributed largely through motor dealerships.
Provident's products include:
Claims are handled in-house from Takapuna, supported by a network of Provident Authorised Repair Facilities. You can call 0800 676 864, Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm, or lodge a claim online at providentinsurance.co.nz. Because Provident MBI is only sold at the car yard, the dealer-offered vs standalone MBI section of our MBI guide is worth reading before you sign.
How customers and rating agencies rate Provident Insurance
Note on ratings: the Google figure of 4.6 from 503 reviews was reported by Quashed as at 12 May 2026, and a financial services directory that mirrors Google data showed 4.6 from 496 in March 2026. We were not able to read a representative set of individual Provident reviews, so we have not shown a positive, mixed and negative split. The review themes below come from Quashed's summary of the Google reviews and from two reviews Provident displays on its own website, which are likely to be among its best. We do our best to keep all data up to date and accurate. If you've noticed something incorrect, please let us know.
Recurring themes in Provident's Google reviews
Really easy to deal with on a claim, with good communication and support throughout, which made the whole thing stress-free.
Easy to deal with the claims team, no long queues on the phone and no effort to avoid paying. That is what insurance is for.
Smooth claims handling and helpful communication, particularly when the repair goes through Provident's approved repairer network.
Payouts arrive quickly once a claim is approved.
Some mechanical breakdown claims take longer than expected because the selling dealer is involved in organising the repair.
Reviews are paraphrased, not verbatim. The two dated reviews are Google reviews that Provident chose to display on its own website. Points labelled "Editorial summary of Google reviews" are our summaries, not quotes, and reflect Quashed's published summary of Provident's Google reviews (May 2026), and we have shown them as common or less common rather than as percentages because we could not count them ourselves. Review content is the opinion of the reviewer, not of Compare.org.nz.
What you can buy from Provident, and where you buy it
Covers the reasonable cost of sudden and unforeseen mechanical or electrical failure, for 1, 2 or 3 years. Pinnacle Cover has no per-claim limit for vehicle categories A and B and up to $10,000 per claim for categories C to G. Classic Cover pays up to $5,000 per claim. Eligibility depends on the vehicle category, from 8 to 16 years old and 80,000 to 250,000 km.
MBI for electric and hybrid vehicles. Non-battery claims are unlimited for category A on the standard policy and up to $10,000 per claim for categories E to G. The traction battery has its own limit, from $10,000 for vehicles up to 10 years old down to $2,500 for vehicles over 12 years on the standard policy.
Comprehensive cover sold direct online, with agreed value, $10 million third-party property liability and $1 million for bodily injury. Quashed lists $10,000 death and $10,000 medical cover, incorrect refuelling cover and keys and locks cover of up to $300 a year as standard. Luxury policies are sold only through dealers.
If your car is written off and the insurance payout is less than what you owe on the loan, Gapcover pays the difference up to the policy limit.
Credit contract indemnity cover that helps meet loan repayments. Consumer NZ reported in 2022 that Provident's maximum claim limit was $4,000 a month or $200,000.

How much does Provident Insurance cost? Published example quotes and indicative ranges
Provident does not publish a price list. For car insurance, the comparison service Quashed published two real Provident quotes in May 2026, shown below. Provident MBI is priced by the dealer at sale, so the third card is an indicative annual range from our MBI cost guide, not a Provident price.
Disclaimer: The two car insurance figures are quotes published by Quashed in May 2026 for the profiles shown. They are not quotes for you and premiums change over time. The MBI figure is an indicative market range from the Compare.org.nz MBI cost guide, not a Provident price or quote. Consumer NZ reported in 2022 that Provident caps dealer commission at 30% for GAP and CCI and 50% for MBI. Your actual premium depends on your vehicle, driving history, location, excess and cover. We do our best to keep all data up to date and accurate. If you've noticed something incorrect, please let us know.
Quashed found the gap between its two example quotes was driven mostly by vehicle value rather than driver age.
MBI eligibility and pricing depend on the vehicle category, its age and its odometer reading.
Pinnacle, Classic and the EV and Hybrid Shield products carry different limits, and MBI runs for 1, 2 or 3 years.
Where the car is kept affects car insurance premiums, as with all NZ insurers.
Glass excess waiver, roadside assistance, rental car and trailer cover add to the car insurance premium.
Choosing a higher excess lowers the premium. MBI excesses start from $150 per unrelated claim.

Other NZ options worth considering for breakdown and car cover
The other large dealer-sold MBI brand, underwritten by Quest Insurance. It offers unlimited roadside call-outs and pro-rata refunds after cooling-off, but its underwriter holds a lower B (Fair) rating.
A digital-first NZ insurance brand selling car insurance online. Worth comparing with Provident's direct car cover if you want to buy and manage a policy online.
One of the largest NZ car insurers, offering comprehensive, third party fire and theft, and third party cover direct, which Provident does not sell direct.
NZ insurer with car, home and contents cover and an A- (Excellent) AM Best rating, for drivers who want a larger insurer and to bundle policies.
Provident may suit car buyers at authorised dealers and drivers wanting simple direct cover
If a dealer offers Provident MBI, the 21-day full-refund cooling-off period gives you three weeks to read the booklet and compare it with standalone MBI before the decision becomes final.
EV Shield and Hybrid Shield set out traction battery limits by vehicle age, which makes it clearer what you are buying for an imported hybrid or used EV.
Quashed notes that Provident's direct car insurance adds no extra excess for inexperienced drivers, and its Toyota Aqua example was the cheapest of seven quotes.
Anyone wanting MBI without buying a car from a dealer, drivers who may want to cancel MBI part way through and get money back, and people who want third party car cover or to bundle home and car insurance.
Compare.org.nz's editorial assessment of Provident Insurance
Provident Insurance is a New Zealand-owned licensed insurer with 4.6/5 from 503 Google reviews and an AM Best rating upgraded to B+ (Good) in December 2024. Its MBI booklets are unusually clear about claim limits, eligibility and battery cover for EVs and hybrids, and its 21-day cooling-off period with a full refund is longer than most dealer-sold products.
The trade-off is what happens after those 21 days. Provident MBI is only sold through authorised dealers, and the booklet states that cancelling after the cooling-off period does not generate a refund, unless Provident failed to meet its disclosure duties under the Fair Trading Act. That makes the first three weeks the time to decide, and the time to compare with Janssen or standalone MBI.
For car insurance bought direct, Provident is worth considering. Quashed's published quotes put it at $116.50 a month for a Toyota Aqua in Auckland, the cheapest of seven quotes returned, with agreed value and $10 million property liability. It sells only comprehensive cover direct, and caps keys and locks cover at $300 a year, so drivers who want third party options or bundled home cover may find AA Insurance or Tower a better fit.
