Who Initio is and what it covers
Initio Insurance is a New Zealand insurance brand founded in Napier in 2011 by Rene and Sam Swindley, built around a single idea: that buying insurance should take a minute rather than an afternoon. Its quote flow asks for the property details it needs and issues a price without requiring a phone number or an email address first.
Policies are underwritten by IAG New Zealand Limited, New Zealand's largest general insurer and the company behind AMI and State. That matters more than the brand name suggests: it means the balance sheet behind an Initio policy is the same one behind two of the country's best-known insurers, and S&P has assigned IAG a AA financial strength rating.
Initio has been recognised repeatedly for the digital experience rather than for price. It took the 2024 Canstar Innovation Excellence Award, and in 2025 was named the fastest-growing services business in the Central North Island in the Deloitte Fast 50. Co-founder Rene Swindley was named ANZIIF Young Insurance Professional in 2018.
Initio suits people who would rather buy online in a few minutes than talk to anyone. If you want a branch, a broker or a phone-first relationship, it is not built for that.
How customers rate Initio, based on reviews Initio collects and publishes itself
Note on review data: the 4.8/5 figure and the 5,870+ review count are published by Initio on its own website and collected through its own review process, so they are not directly comparable with scores gathered by third-party platforms such as Trustpilot or Google. Awards are as announced by Canstar, Deloitte and ANZIIF.
Recurring themes across the reviews Initio publishes on its own website
Quick and easy to select the cover I wanted.
A quote in under a minute without handing over contact details first is genuinely unusual in this market.
Claims handled without the back and forth I expected.
Plain language in the policy wording rather than the usual wall of definitions.
No branch network, so everything happens online or by email.
Smaller product range than the big insurers, with no car or travel cover.
Disclaimer: points labelled "Editorial summary" are our summaries of themes in the reviews Initio collects and publishes on its own website, not verbatim extracts. What you can and cannot insure with Initio
Sum insured cover with 10% inflation protection above your sum insured if a disaster pushes up building costs. Includes hidden gradual damage up to $3,000, temporary accommodation up to $20,000, excess-free keys and locks up to $1,000, an excess-free blocked pipe benefit up to $500, and a reduced $250 glass breakage excess.
Contents cover you can add to a house policy or buy on its own, covering belongings at home and, to a limit, away from home within New Zealand. Cover continues while contents are in transit to a new address or in commercial storage.
Cover for rental properties including loss of rent and tenant damage. Initio is one of the brands most often shortlisted by NZ landlords buying online.
Where a single event damages both your house and your contents, Initio charges one excess rather than two. On typical excesses that is worth several hundred dollars at claim time.
Initio does not sell car, travel, pet or life insurance. If you want everything with one insurer for a multi-policy discount, you will need a broader provider.
Where Initio is strong and where it is not
What Initio costs and what drives the price
Initio does not publish fixed prices, and no NZ insurer does. Premiums are set from your property, your sum insured, your excess and your claims history. The figures below are indicative ranges for a standard profile and are not quotes.
Disclaimer: these are indicative estimates based on publicly available data as at July 2026, not quotes. Your premium will differ. Always obtain a personalised quote directly from Initio.
Your rebuild cost, not market value. This is the single biggest driver of a property premium.
Flood, coastal and seismic exposure are priced at address level, so neighbours can pay different amounts.
A higher excess lowers the premium. Only worth it if you could pay the excess at claim time.
Older homes and non-standard construction generally cost more to insure.
Recent claims on the property or on you push the premium up.
Holding both means one excess where a single event damages each.

Other NZ insurers worth comparing against Initio
Also underwritten by IAG New Zealand, so the balance sheet is identical. Wider product range, higher temporary accommodation limit at $30,000, and a phone and branch network Initio does not have.
The other IAG division, publishing the same core limits as AMI. Worth quoting alongside Initio if you want IAG's backing with a more traditional service model.
A standalone insurer that publishes its multi-policy discount tiers openly, up to 10% on two policies and up to 20% on three or more. Useful if you want everything under one insurer.
Highest published temporary accommodation limit at $40,000, plus a replacement cover benefit that can pay above your sum insured. Sells car cover, which Initio does not.
Who Initio suits, and who it does not
The quote flow is the fastest of the NZ property insurers and does not gate the price behind your contact details.
Landlord cover including loss of rent and tenant damage, available online without an adviser conversation.
One excess where a single event damages both is worth several hundred dollars the first time you claim.
With no car, travel, pet or life cover, a household chasing a multi-policy discount across several products will do better elsewhere.
Compare.org.nz's editorial assessment of Initio Insurance
Initio's strength is the thing it set out to do. Getting a property quote takes about a minute and does not require handing over a phone number, which is still unusual in the New Zealand market. The 2024 Canstar Innovation Excellence Award and the 2025 Deloitte Fast 50 placing both point at execution rather than at price.
The underwriting is the reassuring part. Policies sit with IAG New Zealand, the same underwriter as AMI and State, which carries an S&P AA financial strength rating. Buyers worried about a smaller brand name should weigh that: the entity paying the claim is one of the largest general insurers in the country.
The limitation is scope. Initio covers property and landlord risk and nothing else, so households wanting car, travel or pet cover with the same insurer, and the multi-policy discount that usually comes with it, will need to look at Tower, AA or the IAG brands instead. Worth quoting against AMI and State in particular, since those share Initio's underwriter.
